Western Australia's path to net-zero emissions by 2050 is fraught with challenges, according to a recent report funded by Woodside, the gas giant behind the proposed Browse project. This report, commissioned by Woodside and conducted by Deloitte Access Economics, highlights a stark reality: without a significant acceleration in renewable energy deployment, Western Australia will fall short of its climate goals. The study underscores the urgency of the situation, suggesting that the current trajectory is insufficient to meet the 2050 target, even with the inclusion of the Browse project.
The Browse project, a multi-billion-dollar offshore gas facility, is positioned as a solution to strengthen Western Australia's energy security during the transition to net-zero. However, the report reveals a critical insight: the project itself won't significantly alter the state's emissions trajectory by 2050. Instead, it emphasizes the need for a rapid and sustained increase in renewable energy deployment, a challenge that extends beyond the Browse project.
The report's findings are particularly striking when considering the historical rates of renewable energy deployment. To reach net-zero by 2050 without the Browse project, Western Australia would need to accelerate renewables at an unprecedented pace, 11 times the historical rate. This compresses what would typically take decades into a much shorter timeframe, presenting a formidable hurdle.
The Deloitte report also highlights the potential of the Browse project, predicting a substantial economic uplift and tax revenue. However, it's not without controversy. The Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) has criticized the report as a 'smoke screen' to obscure the environmental and economic costs of the Browse project. CCWA's senior campaigner, Greta Carroll, advocates for concrete emissions reduction targets and a prioritization of renewables over new gas projects.
The report's release coincides with a critical juncture for the Browse gas project. The federal environment department is expected to make a decision on the project before the end of the year, adding further urgency to the debate.
